Biography
Dr. David Biro is one of the most academically accomplished dermatologists in New York. With over 30 years of experience treating skin conditions, a PhD from Oxford University, and a faculty position at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, he brings a depth of expertise that few dermatologists can match. What makes him stand out among patients, though, is something harder to measure: his ability to sit with a patient, hear their concerns, and respond not just as a clinician but as someone who understands what it feels like to be on the other side of the examination table.
Dr. Biro began his academic career at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He went on to complete his MD at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, one of the country’s top medical schools. He then pursued a PhD at Oxford University, a path that sharpened his thinking about disease, language, and the meaning patients attach to illness. This intellectual background informs the way he communicates with patients, taking care to explain diagnoses clearly and acknowledge the emotional weight that skin conditions can carry.
At SUNY Downstate, Dr. Biro serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology, where he trains the next generation of dermatologists. His teaching has earned him the Alpha Omega Alpha Teaching Award, a distinction given by the nation’s medical honor society. New York Magazine has recognized him as a “Top Doctor” multiple times, including 2005, 2006, and 2007. He maintains a hospital affiliation at NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.
Beyond his clinical and academic work, Dr. Biro is a published author with a recognized voice in writing about illness, empathy, and the doctor-patient relationship. At kalon Dermatology, he provides comprehensive medical and cosmetic dermatology services, always with an emphasis on natural results and honest expectations.
