Reducing Wrinkles and Fine Lines
As the body ages, collagen in the skin loosens. Wrinkles and fine lines appear in areas of high activity such as forehead, cheeks, eyes, and mouth.
What is facial volume loss? And how do wrinkles occur? As we age our skin tends to lose its elasticity and a compound known as elastin, which given skin its ability to stretch and tighten. As skin becomes less lax it doesn’t ‘snap back” from changes in size. Over the years your skin, in addition to becoming less lax, also loses its volume. This is due to less collagen production. Collagen gives our faces its fullness, and its supple look/feel. Because of factors such as:
- Age
- Sun damage/exposure
- Diet and exercise
- Skincare habits
Our skin loses collagen and thus its volume. When the volume is lost, areas where we express emotions develop wrinkles and fines lines. The most active of such areas are the forehead, cheeks, eyes, and mouth.
Treatments In order to treat wrinkles and fines lines we generally need to replace the lost facial volume. This allows for us to fill the depressions and ’empty spaces” left behind by the deficit in collagen.
One way to do this is through the use of facial fillers or dermal fillers. The dermal fillers are injected into the site of the wrinkle and fill the space. Depending on which area of the face a different dermal filler will be used. Some dermal fillers to treat wrinkles are:
- Botox Cosmetic
- Dysport
- Juvederm
- Perlane
- Radiesse
- Restylane
Other treatments include Laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion, ultherapy, and chemical peels. To figure out which treatment is best for you we will examine your face and your corrective needs.
