Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Hyperhidrosis is a chronic condition of excessive sweating that can affect the underarms, hands, feet, face or the entire body. It often begins in childhood or adolescence and usually persists without treatment. In the U.S., about 4.8% of people suffer from hyperhidrosis. Despite its prevalence, many patients feel embarrassed and suffer in silence. Persistent underarm or palmar sweating can be uncontrollable, annoying, embarrassing, and isolating, leading to social anxiety and reduced self-confidence. Sufferers commonly report visible sweat stains, discomfort, and fear of being discovered in social or work situations. Untreated, hyperhidrosis can significantly impair daily life for example, raising one’s arms or shaking hands may feel uncomfortable or humiliating.

At kalon Dermatology, we understand the physical and emotional toll of hyperhidrosis. Our Brooklyn and Staten Island clinics are equipped to help you regain confidence with effective sweat reduction therapies. Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation of your sweating pattern and medical history. We identify whether it is primary hyperhidrosis idiopathic, often familial, affecting focal areas like palms, soles, and underarms or secondary hyperhidrosis due to an underlying condition or medication. Regardless of the cause, we focus on controlling the sweating to improve your comfort and quality of life.

Hyperhidrosis Treatment Options

At kalon Dermatology we offer a full spectrum of clinical treatments for hyperhidrosis, from first-line therapies to advanced procedures. We work closely with you to create a customized treatment plan. Key options include:

Prescription Antiperspirants & Topicals

Over-the-counter products often aren’t strong enough for hyperhidrosis. We provide prescription-strength antiperspirants like Drysol, an aluminum chloride formula to apply at night, which can dramatically reduce sweat. These are applied to dry skin and may produce mild irritation, but many patients see improvement within days with ongoing use. We also offer prescription topical agents: for example, glycopyrrolate creams for facial sweating or glycopyrronium tosylate (Qbrexza®) wipes for the underarms. These block the local sweat gland receptors. Such topical treatments are non-invasive and can help especially in the early stages or as maintenance between procedures.

Oral Medications

In some cases we may prescribe oral medications that block nerve signals to sweat glands. Anticholinergic drugs like glycopyrrolate or oxybutynin or even certain antidepressants can decrease sweating for many patients. These are generally used when topical treatments are insufficient. Side effects may include dry mouth or blurred vision, but your dermatologist will carefully choose and adjust medications to minimize these effects.

Iontophoresis (Water Electrolysis)

This safe procedure uses a mild electrical current passed through water on the skin’s surface, usually hands or feet to disrupt sweat gland activity. It is often recommended for palmar (hand) and plantar (foot) hyperhidrosis when creams and antiperspirants fail. Studies show excellent results: about 91% of patients improve and sweating can be reduced by 81% with consistent use. We provide guidance and clinic sessions or prescribe at-home devices to perform iontophoresis 2–3 times per week until symptoms improve, followed by maintenance treatments. There are virtually no systemic side effects, and patients tolerate it well.

Botulinum toxin injections (Botox®)

This is an FDA-approved, highly effective treatment for focal hyperhidrosis, especially underarm sweating. Tiny injections of onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox or HuTox) are placed in the affected area; the toxin blocks the nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands. Multiple studies demonstrate profound sweat reduction about 82 to 87% decrease in underarm sweating. Results begin within a few days and typically last 4 to 12 months. We perform injections in-office; the procedure takes only 10 minutes for both underarms. Patients feel minimal pain, and can immediately resume normal activities; aside from avoiding intense exercise or heat the day of treatment. Botox can also treat sweaty palms, feet, and forehead; studies show it is 80 to 90% effective for palmar hyperhidrosis. This treatment has an outstanding safety profile, and many patients experience freedom from sweat and the need for constant antiperspirant use.

Throughout treatment we combine clinical therapy with lifestyle guidance; wearing breathable clothing, avoiding known triggers, stress management for optimal sweat control. kalon Dermatology offers comprehensive sweat reduction therapy, integrating both in-office procedures and at-home regimens to restore your comfort and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Primary hyperhidrosis has no known external cause; it is thought to be due to overactive nerve signals in the sweat glands, often a genetic tendency. It typically affects the palms, soles, underarms or face. Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by another condition or medication. Common triggers for excessive sweating include endocrine disorders e.g. hyperthyroidism, diabetes/hypoglycemia, infections, hormonal changes (menopause), or side effects of certain drugs. At your consultation, we’ll take a thorough history and may run tests to rule out secondary causes.

Many health plans do recognize hyperhidrosis as a medical condition, especially severe or persistent cases. Prescription treatments like clinical antiperspirants or Botox are often covered if deemed medically necessary. In fact, your insurance company may already cover hyperhidrosis treatments for qualified patients. Coverage varies, so we can provide documentation; diagnosis codes, letters of medical necessity to help maximize reimbursement. We also guide patients on available financial assistance programs e.g. Botox manufacturer savings plans when coverage is limited.

Most hyperhidrosis treatments have minimal recovery time. For example, Botox injections require little office time. Both underarms are injected in 10 minutes and you can return to normal activities right away; just avoid intense exercise or heat (sauna) for the remainder of the day. Iontophoresis and topical therapies have no downtime. Possible side effects are usually mild and temporary: prescription antiperspirants can irritate the skin; Botox injections may cause brief soreness or minor muscle weakness at injection sites especially in palms. Our doctors will explain all risks during your visit and take precautions like numbing cream for injections to keep you comfortable.

Results vary by treatment type. Prescription antiperspirants or topical wipes may take several days of nightly use to show effect. Botox injections typically start to work within 2 to 4 days and reach full effect in about 2 weeks. In clinical trials, Botox reduced underarm sweat by 82 to 87%, and dryness lasted on average 4 to 12 months. For palmar hyperhidrosis, Botox effects last about 6 months and then can be safely repeated. Iontophoresis often requires multiple weekly sessions initially, with significant improvement in a few weeks. We will schedule follow-ups typically every 6 to 12 months for most treatments to touch up any return of symptoms and ensure you maintain optimal control.
